I started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1997, under Johnny Lee Smith a 6th degree Machado Black Belt. I can tell you that lot of things have changed about the BJJ’s instruction since then, However, in terms of self-defense: “old school is the best school”. This is evident from working as a police officer for twenty years on the streets of Birmingham Alabama, Which I used as my laboratory for the study of human violence. I now am passing that knowledge of awareness of danger and knowing how to physically over come it, I have taught world champion martial artists, golden glove boxers, and MMA Champions, as well as police defensive tactics instructors.
